Yeah, not cool. That doesn't promote encouragement at all.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying this forum.

And good luck with the metal. Looking forward to seeing the results. :!:

While there is not always only praise going around here, the general habit on DragonPainting is to look forward.

If you want to work on the metal and the base, that's fine, but I seriously recommend you move on as quickly as possible. He looks great, onto new challenges :D

Also, we're critical, but adjust the bar for every painter based on what's demonstrated in a given piece, what it's intended for, etc. And like Nicolay says, always with the idea that each miniature painted is (almost always) one step in the direction toward greater results.

Jgemrich is a good example of this (as I'm sure you know from the TTG forum). Over the years he's developed a minimalist style that often makes for fantastic results, above and beyond what you often see on the tabletop.

Speaking of JG, we haven't seen him around here for a while... :?:

Criticism is awesome and lovely - that's how I learn. But a positiveness and an encouraging attitude are also awesome and important to retain.

Anyways, I made a grey wash and dulled the base with it. I also drybrushed the base and put some dark grass on it. I also added washesh, highlights and darker shadows to the metal parts. A bit over half an hour of work and the result is a definite improvement in my mind:

Yeah, great! Love the base now. Still a bit too saturated but a billion times better than before. The washes did the trick, but I think the grass just added something to it to remove it completely from the mini in texture and shape.

The metal now looks more like metal, instead of metal paint. Unless its some superbly crafted samurai katana photographed in a high contrast environment, metal is usually quite dull on flat surfaces and sparkling heavily on edges.

Good job and as yamaneko said ... onto the next one! :D
Looking forward to more from you.

Much better!
He's looking grand now. Maybe try some coloured glazes/washes with your next mini jut to give it a bit more pop. Still think this guy is very cool.
